Following the destruction of Hurricane Michael in 2018, Tyndall Air Force Base was severely damaged and has begun the process of rebuilding. With an extensive master plan aimed at creating an Air Force Base for the future with personnel health in mind, the 325th Fighter Wind Headquarters is a key part of the plan with innovative building materials and hurricane resilient design.

Our project aims to provide a varied user experience through the lenses of building operation, occupant health, and leisure spaces. These concepts drove the analysis of the site and development of the massing. By orienting the building to receive the most evenly distributed amount of sunlight throughout the day, it lends itself to manipulation of the forms from regular to offset masses, sloped roofs, and large overhangs. The offset wings of the building opened the way for the use of a central atrium as a connector and as an experienced space. This interaction of spaces provide the occupants with an efficient, yet enjoyable building to work in.

Looking into the further development of the project, the major structural elements to support the large overhangs as well as the building envelope are next to be developed.
