RIPPLED SLATS

MIDEWIN, ILLINOIS

Spring Semester, 2020

This fire station is located in the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Illinois for the Hotshot crew. Given the prairie's flat topography and open nature, direct sunlight was a major consideration for the project as well as the low usage of the building.

The addition of a visitor's center increases the amount of usage the building receives year round. The L-shape of the building provides an enclosed central courtyard that allows the private and public realms to intersect. The façade of the building is comprised of thin panels that are arranged to block the highest amount of direct sunlight, yet still allow natural light inside the buildings.
