THRESHOLDS IN LIGHT

This pavilion is located in the courtyard of Lee Hall. The structure consists of three levels in order to create a comprehensive experience in relation to the filtering of light as it reaches the level below grade. The primary methods of filtering light are colored panels of plexiglass, frosted glass, and perforated wood panels.

The materials were chosen for the various ways that they filter light. The colored plexiglass on the grade level creates strong red-colored light strips below grade. The perforated wood panels prevent directional light from reaching the ground, but still allow white light to contrast the red light on the ground. The frosted glass is used as walls under the upper platform with a red plexiglass ceiling. The light is diffused among the frosted glass wall panels and creates a glowing box. The wood framing is critical in maintaining the quality of light as it does not reflect the light further like steel would.
